Mindfulness is the practice of suspending judgement. This requires holding and focusing on each thought until its emotional impact is lost. Mindfulness provides a neutral outlook that conquers the knee-jerk reactions of addiction. Through various types of addiction therapy, there is one central component: Finding new, healthier ways to deal with daily stresses while maintaining a clear perspective. Perhaps because this mindset is an important part of yoga practice, researchers are testing yoga’s efficacy in treating addiction. Medical experts are theorizing that yoga may actually break the addictive cycle. Yoga therapy works in contrast to most therapies for addiction, which isolate either the psychological or physiological element, by treating the body and mind simultaneously. The peaceful poses of yoga rest both our brain and body. It is here that our energy can be harnessed toward changing unhealthy habits.
1. Marjarisina(cat ): While on your hands and knees, you inhale as head elevates and your stomach drops. Pause briefly.
2. 2. Ushtrasana (camel): Begin by kneeling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Reach back towards your calves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Gently return forward if there is too much discomfort. Those more experienced may rest their hands on their ankles. Return within one minute.

cycle. New York City addiction psychotherapist Mary Margaret Frederick, Ph.D. states:
"Yoga treats the biology and the psychology of an addict. The will and determination

(3)Peter Stein; a drug counselor at the North Charles Institute for Addictions in Somerville, Massachusetts, uses Hatha yoga in combination with methadone and group therapy. All forms of yoga facilitate a balanced approach to life. It has been said that yoga is

This objectivity is an integral aspect of mindfulness. Though some may practice yoga solely for the physical rewards, mindfulness and yoga are inseparable. Here-and-now focus is the only way we can maintain the balance and alignment needed to perform postures without injury. Mindfulness has other, far less visible rewards. By sustaining this state we activate deep-relaxation in which our brain produces alpha waves. These produce a condition known as picture-thinking. In this awareness we see ourselves act without feeling the emotions attached. As the practice of mindfulness teaches non-judgement, over time, images of past behavior can be acknowledged with a degree of neutrality. This helps us to forgive ourselves and ultimately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], others. to conquer even the most severe of addictions. In Rajasthan, New Delhi, former
schoolteacher Narain Singh uses “light yoga exercises” along with group therapy to ease

News reports that of the 16 opium addicts who converged, all left cured. "The basis of cure

Sports – like novels and soap operas – allow men to identify and live vicariously through “their team”. They follow intensely emotional storylines involving heroes, villains,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], jokers, underdogs, overcoming obstacles, human frailties, perseverance and testing the limits of the human body and will. So, the next time you think your partner doesn’t express his emotions – just observe him while he’s watching his favourite sports team play.
In general,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is true that women in our society are better ‘educated’ in understanding and expressing a wider range of emotions. For example, it is more culturally acceptable for young girls to express sadness, fear, disappointment or embarrassment. Often young boys are told, “be a man… suck it up… don’t be weak”. So why are we surprised when those boys grow up to be emotionally uneducated men? Further, these men have not learned how to constructively express negative emotions in ways that don’t leave them feeling vulnerable or open to criticism – e.g., fear, embarrassment or guilt. As a result, they may cover up these ‘primary’ negative emotions with a ‘secondary’ negative emotion such as anger – which, in the short-term,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leaves them feeling less vulnerable. The good news is that it is not too late for someone to educate themselves in order to better understand and communicate how they are feeling and that there are many constructive ways to deal with unpleasant feelings.
Of course it’s not completely true that men don’t attend therapy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], women are more likely to attend therapy in greater numbers. According to Statistics Canada,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are also differences in the types of mental health disorders and addictions reported by men and women. Approximately 6% of women and 4% of men experienced a mood disorder during the past year. On the other hand, about 4% of men and 2% of women had a problem related to substance dependence in the same period (Statistics Canada 2003).
Okay, but how does this help me if my partner still says “I don’t know” when I ask him how he is feeling? Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most people don’t know how to ask effectively. Here’s a tip, when he says “I don’t know” this is what it usually means… he doesn’t know! Don’t assume the worst – e.g., “he’s just trying to avoid talking about it”, “he’s intentionally trying to make me mad”. I discovered that those people who are constantly looking for ways to hurt those around them, are people who are in a great deal of pain, people who have suffered and are still suffering. People who have no love for themselves and people who see themselves as being worthless and of no value. It is a mask that they wear, a mask to protect themselves from more suffering. Because they don’t want to experience more pain, they act in ways that are pushing the people around them away. They act in ways that others find repulsive, unorthodox and self-destructive. It is easier for us to judge and reject than to understand and empathise. People can’t seem to understand that nobody really enjoys this kind of behavior. It is all an act, a mask.

What was fascinating to me was not only the answers themselves, but the way the answers diverged so much. It appears that productivity is a very personal matter. When it comes to productivity, it's different strokes for different folks. In fact, many people are busy for no reason,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or for the wrong reason. They think it makes them more productive. Or they feel more productive because of all of the activity, but yet they aren't truly more productive. Busy does not equal productive at all. That is one of the biggest fallacies of our society these days.
Recently, I posted the following series of questions on my Facebook business page: How do you define being "productive"? Do you think of it as literally producing more? Or is it about helping you feel more in control or "balanced"? Do you tie it into impacting your bottom line and making more money? Or is that less important to you than its affect on your peace of mind?
What about using productivity to feel (and be) more at peace,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], happy, and successful? For many people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is a better measurement of productivity. My personal definition of productivity falls more into this category. To me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], being productive is accomplishing what I set out to do. That makes me feel personally productive as I have identified particular items as important and prioritized them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so they are the ones I should be focusing on. But it is less about having more, or even doing more, but feeling balanced,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in control,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and at peace. In fact, I have realized over the years that I am a productive as a means to living a successful and passionate life. If I were just productive for the sake of productivity, I would not be as happy or feel as balanced.
Some people do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact, think of being productive as producing more, or getting more done. And that's not a big surprise as to be productive literally means to produce. Therefore, many of us tend to translate being productive to mean that we need to keep doing and going and producing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and all at the same time. However, this can cause a ton of stress in our lives and make the quality of what we are producing decrease. I am just as guilty of that as others. So it takes a brave person to realize that you can have it all, but just not at the same time! This is a perfect example of why multi-tasking is not always the best course of action.
Why are differences in the definition of productivity important to recognize? For one, productivity consultants need to keep this in mind and can't try to give a "one size fits all" solution to clients. From my perspective, most productivity consultants are quite aware of this, but it still bears mentioning. And all of us need to give this some thought and determine what our personal definition of productivity is. That is the best way to measure whether we feel (and are) productive. We first have to know what being productive truly means to us.
So I encourage you to determine what YOUR personal definition of productivity is. Don't worry so much about what everyone else is doing or thinking. Yes, it is great to read,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], research, model and learn all about productivity (trust me, I am obsessed with it!) But it is also important to march to the beat of your own drum, and measure your success in the area of productivity against your own personal standard.
